Musings of a Seamstress

I am taking a quick break from working on my coat to update my blog before it gets too late.  I have been posting really late at night lately because of my crazy work schedule and I am not a fan of that.  I hate trying to write a post at 10 o’clock at night when I am half asleep.  This week marks the return of a normal work schedule and hopefully a more reliable blog schedule.

Before I go back to my coat, I do want to share a puppy approved doggy treat recipe.   Penny, my puppy, and I made her some cookie treats this morning.  Trust me she knows the difference between biscuits that we buy at the store and cookies.  If you ask if she wants a cookie, she loses her mind! This is my own personal recipe, so I hope you enjoy it.

Penny’s Thanksgiving Cookies

Musings of a Seamstress

Prep time: 20-25 minutes     Cook time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

1 1/4  cup flour

3/4 cup oats

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 15oz can of pure pumpkin filling (not seasoned)

dash of cinnamon

1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl, until it becomes doughy.

2. Place dough onto a floured surface and knead a few times. Dust your rolling pin in flour and roll out the dough until it is 1/4″ thick.  Cut with cookie cutter.  Place each cookie on a greased cookie sheet.

3. Repeat step 2 until you use all or most of the dough.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.  Remove from cookie sheet and let cool for a few minutes.

This recipe should yield you about 2 dozen depending on what size of cookie cutter and shape you use.  These will still remain soft once cooled.  These will only stay fresh for about a week if left at room temperature.  I haven’t tried it yet, because they are never around long enough, but I am guessing you could freeze these if you know your dog will not eat them all.  I would just recommend thawing them completely first.

I did quite a bit of research before developing this recipe and I wanted to share a little of what I found with you.  Pumpkin and cinnamon are incredibly good for dogs.  Cinnamon helps ease arthritis pain in older dogs while also improving heart circulation.  Pumpkin, on the other hand, helps to calm a dogs upset stomach, reduce the chances of cataracts and improves heart health.

With all the controversy lately about imported pet treats causing health problems and even death in our four legged friends, I will gladly continue making my own.  Not to mention how much cheaper it is on my wallet.  I have a few other recipes that I am working on and will share once they are ready too.  They also have some great health benefits.

If you and, more importantly, your dog enjoyed this recipe, please consider donating a dollar or two to our adoption fund.  Thank you!
